Questions and Answers:

1) What is Cisco Jabber and E911 RLM?

  • Cisco Jabber is a unified communication tool to manage phone calls.
  • E911 RLM software allows phone location information to be shared with 911 emergency services when 911 is dialed using Cisco Jabber.

2) How do I request Cisco Jabber and E911 RLM?

3) Once I have submitted request for Cisco Jabber software how do I attain the software?

Windows PC Devices:

  • After your software request submission Institutional Effectiveness and Technology (IET) will notify you that your user profile has been added to Jabber. You will then be able to follow instructions provided in this article to install Cisco Jabber and E911 RLM Software.

Mac Devices:

  • After your software request submission, IET will schedule a time to have the software installed on your computer.

Windows Devices:

Before following instructions in the next section, ensure you have completed steps 1 thru 3:

  • Step 1) After software request submission IET will notify you that your user profile has been added to Jabber.
  • Step 2) Once you've received notification your user profile has been added to jabber please follow these instructions: Cisco Jabber / E911 Software Install.
  • Step 3) After you have completed the software install please follow the instructions provided below to complete the first time client setup.

Mac Devices:

After your software request submission, IT Services will contact you to schedule a time to have the software installed on your computer.


Instructions: Access and First Time Set up: Cisco Jabber and E911 RLM Client

  • Step 3) Accept the Certificate window should one pop up.
  • Step 4) Enter your StarID and click Continue.

  • Step 6) Enter your StarID password and click Sign In.

  • Step 7) The E911 RLM software should automatically launch during sign in. If it doesn't you can go to the system tray and right-click on the E911 green dot icon. 
    • Select Manage my location.

  • Step 8) When on campus you will be given the option to choose a current location.
    • Note: Please allow an hour for the system to synchronize with your newly installed software before the locations are displayed. You may manually enter in your location in the meantime.

  • Step 9) When using Cisco Jabber for the first time or at a different location on one of our campuses, please click on Select a different address and choose a new location.You may search by typing in the building number in the search field.For example: MEC_4000, Please remember to use an underscore between the building name and room number.Click on and highlight which location you are at and then click on the Select button.The new location will be chosen and the system will also remember and automatically chose this location should you use Cisco Jabber in this room again.

  • Step 10) When off campus, you will be asked to enter in your address.This will only need be done once at each new location as the system remembers your locations and will automatically choose it for you. Click on Edit my Location and enter in your current address information in each of the fields and then Click Save.

  • The system will then verify your address and then display it in the window.If your location is correct, you may close out the window by clicking on the X in the upper right side of the window. Note: The purpose of the E911 RLM software is for emergency services to be able to locate the you in the event 911 is dialed via the Jabber client.

  • Step 11) Navigating the CIsco Jabber Client. Please note: We are still in the early stages of using Cisco Jabber so the Meetings and Voicemail options may not be currently available to all users.


Making / Answering Calls

IMPORTANT! If at a Metro State Campus, connected to Eduroam, please connect to VPN prior to starting a Jabber session.

There are three options for making calls.
  • Making a phone call Option 1:
  • Step 1) Click on the Call icon and enter the number in the search field.
  • Step 2) Click on the green call button when the result window appears.
    • Calling from Cisco Jabber is the same as calling from your desk phone
    • You may dial 4-digit extensions for internal calls.
    • You will need to use 9 + 10-digit dialing for external calls (example: 96125551234)
    • For long distance calls you will need to use 9+1+10-digit dialing

  • Making a phone call Option 2:
  • Step 1) Click on the dial pad and enter the number using the dial pad.
  • Step 2) Click on the green call button.

  • Making a call Option 3:
  • Step 1) Click on the Call icon.
  • Step 2) Hover your mouse cursor over a recent call.
  • Step 3) Click on the green call button.
  • Answering a Phone Call:
  • When a phone call comes in, a new window with caller ID information will pop up.Click on the green Answer button to take the call or click on the Decline button to decline the call.

  • Call In Progress and Ending a Call
  • When a call is answered, a new window will pop up with the caller's information and calling options.


Voicemail and Meetings:

Please Note: We are still in the early stages of using Cisco Jabber so the Meetings and Voicemail options may not be currently available to all users. Other ways voicemail is available is by logging into www.metrostate.edu/voicemail on campus or you can access this link remotely with a VPN connection. Voicemail messages are also forwarded to email, as well as voicemail messages may be accessed through your phone. Ways to access voicemail messages. 
  • Voicemail
  • When a new voicemail message is left on your phone, a red number will appear on the voicemail icon. Click on the voicemail icon to display your messages.

  • You may listen to your messages by selecting one of the messages and pressing the play button in the voicemail details screen. There are several options available:

  • Meetings
  • Click on the Meetings button and your current meetings for the day will be displayed here.


Connecting a Headset

  • Step 1) Enable Bluetooth pairing on your headset and click on the Bluetooth icon.
  • Step 2) Your device should be displayed in the list. Click on the device to connect.
