This article will cover how to navigate to a quiz, explain the user interface a student would see when you take a quiz, and how to view the results of a completed quiz.

Starting in the course where you want to take the quiz:
- Click on Assessments in the navigation bar
- Select Quizzes in the Drop-down Menu
- On the Quizzes screen, select the name of the quiz you want o take
Before Starting
After you click on the name of the quiz, you are taken to the Quiz Details page. The page lists the following items:
- Current Time: The time you access the quiz Summary page.
- Quiz Period: The Start Date and End Date for a quiz. If a quiz does not have dates listed, you can take the quiz anytime during the course.
- Time allowed: The time limit you have to respond to the questions in the quiz.
- Attempts: The number of times (i.e. attempts) you can take the quiz.
- Instructions: General instructions for taking a quiz, including saving your responses, navigating through pages (if applicable), and starting the quiz.
Once you are ready to take the quiz, select the blue Start Quiz! button at the bottom of the screen. If there is a time limit on the quiz, it will not start until you select the Start Quiz! button.
During the Quiz:
Once you start the quiz, you will be taken to the main interface for the quiz divided into three sections. Along the top across the page, you will see the section that lists:
- Time Remaining
- An “X” button to close the quiz
- Note: Closing the quiz will not stop the quiz timer
If you would like to hide the timer, hover over the timer with your cursor and you will see the option to hide it.
When the timer is hidden, the button will display as Show Timer along with a blue circle that slowly turns grey as time remaining elapses toward the quiz expiration.
Note: Once the time reaches the end, there will be a small blue dot in the 12 o'clock position of the circle. The circle will not be completely grey at the end.
Note: Once the time is complete, your saved answers will be automatically submitted to D2L.
Along the left-hand side of the screen, you will see a sidebar that contains:
- The number of pages in the quiz
- Quiz question tiles
The tiles in the side bar are click able and take you to the specific question number when you click on them. Once you answer the question the dashes in the tile will change to a check mark indicating that you have answered the question and that the system saved the answer.
To the right of the sidebar you will see the main content area. This area includes:
- Two buttons to navigate to the next and previous page above and below the questions
- The Submit Quiz button at the bottom of the page
The Submit Quiz button will turn blue once you reach the last page, but you can submit the quiz at any time once it is started.
After the Quiz:
After pressing the Submit Quiz button, there will be a confirmation screen to verify that the quiz is ready to be submitted.
D2L will list any questions that you have not answered. To navigate to those questions, you can either select the name of the question in the list or select the question tile in the side bar.
Once you are satisfied with the quiz and selected the Submit Quiz button again, you will be taken to the quiz results screen where you can see your score. It is up to the instructors to release the questions after the quiz is over.
Important: Your quiz score and statistical information are not available until they are released by your instructor.
- On the Quiz List page, under the Evaluation Status column, select the On Attempt link in the row of the quiz you want to view.
- On the Quiz Submissions page, view your quiz score under the Score column.
- Note: If you don't see your quiz score or you see a zero for your score (e.g. 0 / 20), please contact your instructor to ask about your ‘unpublished’ quiz attempt.
- Select the Attempt link to view your quiz attempt.
- On the Attempt page, you may see your quiz score and/or the quiz questions. Depending on the settings your instructor set-up, you may see incorrect responses, correct responses, or all your responses to the questions. If you have questions about the quiz score, please contact your instructor.
What if there is no Start Quiz! button?
The two most common reasons not to see the Start Quiz! button are:
- The attempt is taking place outside of the quiz period. Double check the dates when the quiz is offered.
- The maximum number of attempts have been completed. Double check to see how many attempts are available.
Why can't I see question answers viewing a quiz submission?
Instructors have the ability to control what is released to the students in the on the Quiz Results screen. If you believe that you should be able to view the answers to the quiz after you have completed it, please refer to your instructor.
