eLumen: Assessing Student Learning Outcomes

Summary

Within eLumen, coordinators and faculty model and score their assessments, collect student evidence, and submit a variety of reports.

Body

General Information

About:

  • Within eLumen, the process of assessments begin with department coordinators and faculty modeling, creating, scoring, collecting student evidence, and then producing a variety of reports. One purpose of assessment is to carefully differentiate students’ abilities; another is to capture the percentage of Metro State's students having satisfactorily demonstrated a learning outcome.

Information:

eLumen supports assessments that directly score student learning outcomes (SLOs) within the rubric and those where an expanded rubric is used to score a single or multiple SLOs. There are two types of assessments available:

  • Outcomes-Oriented: A user can set up an outcomes-oriented assessment in which each designated student learning outcome has a single set of performance descriptions. Faculty then use the rubric to score students for each learning outcome directly.
  • Activity-Oriented: A user can set up an activity-oriented assessment in which individual student work is assessed using weighted, specific criteria, and explicit performance descriptions. eLumen uses these scores and weights to generate a suggested composite rubric score for each student for one SLO or multiple SLOs using one or more rubrics.

Assessment Scale

  • Each individual mapping of score levels to mastery levels is called an Assessment Scale; Assessment Scales are what is used when configuring assessments in eLumen.

SLO Performance Descriptions for Easy, Standardized Rubrics

  • eLumen supports the creation of default performance descriptors for each assessment scale configured within the system and specific performance descriptors for each student learning outcome. When used, outcomes-oriented assessments will automatically populate the performance descriptions in the rubric.

Scoring Assessments

  • There are two ways to capture assessment scores in eLumen: individual scoring and collective scoring.
    • Individual Scoring:
      • Activity-Oriented assessments displays recommended scores and present the final scores as assigned by evaluators. Outcomes-Oriented assessments are where SLOs are scored directly by their accompanying performance descriptions.
    • Collective Scoring:
      • Collective Scores can collect assessment data as collective scores: e.g., the number of students assessed at each score level/mastery level. Collective scoring offers the convenience of quick input into the system, but limits the ability to use the data to track, control for, and assess the progress of individual students.

Viewing Assessment Outcomes

eLumen provides both reports on assessment outcomes and an assessment outcomes dashboard for Department Coordinators and Data Stewards. The dashboard displays collective outcomes for each assessment in dynamic widgets.
