StarID Password Reset: University Owned Mac

Overview

When assigned a University Owned MacBook, special steps need to be taken when resetting your StarID password. These steps ensure that the updated password is correctly synced to the MacBook and the keychain is updated with the new password. Not following these steps can lead to being unable to sign into the MacBook with the new password, being unable to print from the MacBook, and needing to reset the keychain losing all associated stored passwords.

    • Connected to the eduroam wireless network or plugged into the wired network using a docking station.
  2. Off-Campus
    • You must be connected to the VPN to gain access to the enterprise network
    • To connect to the VPN open Cisco Secure Client from the Menu Bar icon  or from the Launchpad
    • The VPN address is connect.metrostate.edu. Select Connect then enter your StarID and Password.

Sign in to your MacBook with the new password

The first time you sign in to your MacBook with a new password, a copy of the password is encrypted and cached (saved) locally on the computer. This locally saved password allows you to sign in to the computer without being connected to the enterprise network.

After waiting approximately 5 minutes, you can update your saved password on the MacBook. It is possible the VPN will disconnect your session when it receives the new password from MinnState. If the session disconnects, you may see the message below. If you do, simply select OK and then Connect to the VPN again with your new password.

  • Once you are connected to the VPN, you can update your saved password.
  • Go to System Settings

  • Go to Users & Groups then select the  icon

  • Select the Change button

  • Enter your old password and new password then select Change Password

  • Your new StarID password has now been saved locally.

Keychain Access

When signing into the MacBook with your new password for the first time, you may be shown a warning window that states "The system was unable to unlock your keychain." If this happens, you must select the "Update Keychain Password" button and enter your old password. Using the old password will unlock the keychain and allow the operating system to automatically update the keychain with your new password.
