Email Class List Using My.Metro (my.metrostate.edu)

Question:

  • How can I use the Class List in My.Metro to communicate with students in my courses?  What features are available in the Class List for me to use to communicate with my students?

Answer:

NOTE: The primary recommended way to communicate with students in your class is to use the functionality within D2L to email your students.  This provides a secondary alternative for communicating via email.

Log In to MyMetro by clicking on the blue Log in to My.Metro button.

Log in with your StarID username and password. 

You will see your Employee Dashboard.  Click on My Courses.

You will then see a list of courses that you teach.

Click on the Class List below the course listed that has the students you want to communicate via email with.

Once you click on Class List, you will see a list of individual students in your class, and their email addresses.

Select All Student In Class List

To select all students in your class list, click on the box in the upper left next to the table headings.  This will check the box next to all of your student's names in your class list.

Click on the blue button and Create draft Outlook email with list.

You may need to click Accept on the following screen the first time you use this feature in order to allow a draft email to be created.

You will see a green box with the following message when you click the button.  Click on open your draft folder on Office365.com.

An email will be placed in your "Drafts" folder so you can customize it and send it to your class list.  You can view and modify this draft email both in Office365.com and in the Microsoft Outlook Client.

 

Selecting Specific Students In Class List

You can also pick and choose which students you would like to select to email in your class list.  Check the boxes next to the names of the students you wish to email.

You may need to click Accept on the following screen the first time you use this feature in order to allow a draft email to be created.

Exporting a CSV (comma separated values) file or Copy Email Addresses

There is a grey button at the top under your course name with options to export a CSV (comma separated values) file to edit in Microsoft Excel as well as an option to copy all of the email addresses you have selected in your class list.

If you click on CSV, you will see a new file downloaded within whatever Internet browser you are using that you can open and modify.

If you click on Copy, you can paste the email addresses selected into any application including the To: field on an email you would like to compose to students in your class.

Search Feature

To quickly find a student in your class list, click on the Search text box and start typing in their name.  Results will appear as you type.
