Question:
- Can I use Respondus LockDown Browser for my quizzes in D2L Brightspace?
Answer:
Yes. While Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is not turned on automatically, it is available. It is intended for use in a setting with a live proctor. If remote proctoring is required, LDB should be used with Monitor (learn how to get started with Respondus Monitor).
Steps to enable LockDown Browser:
- Contact us through the Service Portal and request LDB be enabled for your new course.
- Go to Assessments > Quizzes. Note the new LockDown Browser tab in your Quizzes tool:
- After launching the LDB tab from Quizzes, set up your quizzes on the dashboard tab. Consult this Quick Start guide to set up an existing quiz quickly:

- Apply any advanced settings (such as letting students use a built-in calculator or an iPad).
- Save any changes.
- Students on their own devices will take their quizzes the same way they always do. When they start a quiz, they will be able to install the LDB software if they have not before. For students taking quizzes in Metro State labs and classrooms, the software is already installed.
- Respondus also provides excellent guides to the tool right inside D2L. Next to the Dashboard tab find: Getting Started, Video Tutorials, Guides and Support, and Other Systems. They also offer frequent webinars.
Notes:
- Faculty should always provide time for students to take a practice test to discover and address technology issues. Faculy can add a no stakes practice test to their course or can refer students to our Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor practice site in D2L to take a practice test whenever and as often as they want.
- Respondus LockDown Browser works with Chromebooks but student success might vary. LDB does not work on phones or most tablets. Students have to use a computer, Chromebook, or an iPad (if the iPad option is enabled by the faculty member in the LDB quiz set up).
