FACULTY: Create a rubric in D2L Brightspace and connect it to an assignment or discussion.

Creating a rubric
- From the course home page, select Other Tools in the menu bar and then select Rubrics in the dropdown menu.
- Select the blue New Rubric button.
- Enter a name for the rubric in the Name text box.
- After the name text box, use the Type button to choose the type of rubric you want to use.
- An Analytic Rubric allows you to identify criteria and point levels for each criterion.
- A Holistic Rubric allows one overall criterion where you can identify the overall achievement on an activity.
- Next to the Type button, use the Scoring button to choose the type of scoring for the rubric.
- Points: all criteria are worth the same number of points.
- Custom Points: each criterion can be worth a different number of points.
- No Score: allows away to provide standardized feedback on activities.
- Use the Plus buttons on the left and right side of the levels to add additional levels.

- Use the + Add Criterion button at the bottom of the table to add additional criteria to the rubrics.

- (Optional) If you want to break one area into more specific criteria, you can use the Add Criteria Group to add additional criteria groups.
- At the bottom of the page, enter information for the overall score levels for an activity.
- Select the Close button when complete.
Attaching rubrics to discussions or assignments
- Go to the Edit page for the activity you want to attach the rubric.
- Expand the Evaluation & Feedback panel in the right sidebar
- Select the Add Rubric button.

- Select the rubric you want to add to the assignment.
- Select the Save and Close button at the bottom of the page.
As of June 2026, once attached, you will visually see a rubric icon with the discussion, assignment, or quiz.
