Outlook Email and Login for Employees

Question:

Employee email address and Microsoft login

Your Metro email address is not the same as your Microsoft login
  1. Email Address:
    • firstname.lastname@metrostate.edu (example: jane.jones@metrostate.edu)
    • If there is more than one person with the same first and last name there may be a number included in an email address (example: jane.jones.2@metrostate.edu).
    • Your email address is not used as the username to access your email. You use your Microsoft login to access your email.
  2. Microsoft Login:
    • starid@minnstate.edu (example: xy4321ab@minnstate.edu)
    • You use your Microsoft login to access your email and Office applications.
    • Also known as your MinnState login because of the "@minnstate.edu"

Login Troubleshooting:

If you receive an error message stating your password is incorrect please try logging in to D2L.

When logging in to D2L, use only your StarID (e.g. xy4321ab) and StarID password. If you can sign into D2L, you may be typing the password incorrectly when signing in to Outlook.

If you get an incorrect password error on D2L or cannot sign into Outlook after multiple attempts, reset your StarID password.

How to Reset StarID Password:

  • Important Note: It will take up to 30 minutes for your new password to sync to your Outlook email and allow you to sign in.
  1. Browse to StarID Self Service at starid.minnstate.edu
  2. Select Reset my Password
  3. Select one of the options to reset your password
    • If you select “I know my email” option, you will need to select a personal email address (such as gmail, yahoo, etc.) to obtain a verification code. Do NOT use your Metropolitan State University or other Minnesota State institution email address.
  4. Wait 30 minutes after resetting your password and try signing into Outlook again
  • If you need further assistance, please contact the Metro State University Institutional Effectiveness and Technology (IET) Service Desk at 651-793-1240 or click here to Get Help.
