Perusall

Summary

FACULTY: Description of Persuall social annotation tool and how to add it to a course in D2L Brightspace

Body

Overview

Perusall is a social annotation tool that allows students and faculty to collaboratively annotate books, articles, and videos. It encourages deeper engagement with course materials and other students. Faculty can set up reading/watching, peer review, or instructor review assignments. It is integrated with D2L Brightspace so students are signed in by a link in a course and grades can be passed back to D2L.

Add Perusall to D2L Brightspace

To create and access your Perusall account, add a link to a course in D2L:

  1. Go to Content module where you want student to launch Perusall.
  2. Select Existing Activities
  3. Select External Learning Tools
    • Select Perusall
    • Agree to terms of service and privacy statement if it is the first time
    • Select Link to Home Page
    • Select the new Perusall link in content to go to Perusall and set up your library and assignments.
  4. Access Perusall via any D2L link added with these steps. It will take the user to the paired Perusall course, from which one can access general account settings and other courses. From Perusall home, one can create book clubs or workshops separate from D2L, or participate in “Perushall,” a global user forum.

Add Content in Perusall

Manage your Perusall content library, including readings (PDFs, EPUBs), videos, images, and podcasts.

  • Usage rights: It is always advisable to consult with faculty reference liaison librarians when selecting course materials, especially for help determining whether usage rights for a given resource allow it to be used in Perusall or D2L Brightspace.
  • Documents: Faculty can add their own documents and any open texts in PDF, epub, Word, PowerPoint and other file types.
  • Videos: Faculty can add their own videos by uploading to OneDrive then getting a public sharing link. Caption files will also need to be uploaded. It is possible to add Media Space videos and caption files. Reach out to academic technology services for initial instruction on this method.
  • Books: If planning to add an open textbook, faculty can upload it as an epub or PDF. For typical publisher texts students will purchase, search Persuall’s catalog for the book, then tell our bookstore to order the Perusall version of the book. Students can then buy an access code through the bookstore.

Create and grade assignments

  • Assignments: Perusall offers several assignment types, including discussions around assigned reading or videos, peer reviews, instructor reviews, and fishbowl assignments.
  • Scoring and Grades: Perusall offers grading templates for automatic or manual scoring, rubrics, integration with the D2L gradebook, and detailed analytics.
