Process for hiring a student worker

1) Review Metropolitan State University Procedure 512: Student Employment.  This procedure explains the different salary levels. PLEASE NOTE: this procedure is in the process of being revised to reflect current salary rates. Current salary rates are as follows:

Level A  $    12.00
Level B  $    13.00
Level C  $    14.50
Level D  $    16.00
Level E  $    16.00

Student Employees are eligible for raises every 6 months. Financial Services tracks the dates and processes raises.


2) Student Employment positions will be posted on Handshake. See instructions in the Posting Student Staff Position on Handshake job aid.


3) Candidate Selection. Each candidate will submit their application/resume as you specify in the
Student Employment Posting form. When reviewing candidate submissions, select candidates
that meet the most qualifications and schedule interviews.


4) Once your candidate has been chosen, complete all required hiring paperwork and submit to
Student Payroll via MoveIt Secure Fileshare. All MinnState employees and students have an account. All required hiring paperwork can be found below.

I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
Student Tax Residency Information Form*
I-94 arrival/departure record^
I-20 SEVIS Form^
Unexpired Foreign Passport, Visa Pages^

*Only applicable for international students

^International Students must provide these documents.


5) Student Payroll staff will review the documentation you submit and notify you if any required
paperwork is incomplete or missing. When all paperwork is complete, Student Payroll staff will send a
“Welcome” email to the new student worker and copy the hiring supervisor. *NOTE* The
chosen candidate should not start working until this email is received.

Student Payroll – This is the Financial Services staff who process the day‐to‐day student payroll and will
