Overview: Microsoft Office 365 (O365) Migration

Minnesota State O365 Project Overview and Resources

Minnesota State has been transitioning all campuses to a shared Microsoft Office 365 academic environment for all students and employees.  Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of cloud-hosted tools which includes the Office Productivity Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), email and calendar system (Outlook), and Skype for Business.  This project also impacts the way employees and students log in and access resources.

After migration, students and employees who are actively affiliated with multiple Minnesota State institutions will be able to access their email, calendars, and other Office 365 resources from any location with a single account. 

When will Metro State migrate to Minnesota State Office 365 Shared Tenant? 

The migration is scheduled for November 8, 9, and 10, 2019.

What is the impact to my personal files and settings? Summary below, click for more information on dates and impacts.

  • Email Outage November 8 - 10, 2019
    • No access to email and mail may be returned to sender, encourage phone or D2L messaging during this time
    • Mail will migrate, but many personal settings will need to be saved by you, see our pre-migration checklist
    • This outage may also affect a number of applications that leverage your O365 account for logging in, like: Office 365 Online, some features on the Service Portal, Gartner, Civitas, Campus Labs IDEA and Engage, Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning, Technology Services Chat/Remote Support, etc.
  • Office 365 Online/OneDrive Content Freeze October 25 - November 10
    • Personal files stored online in Office 365 Online/OneDrive will migrate, but changes between October 25 and November 10 will not (affects students collaborating online), it is recommended to save files locally during this time
  • Microsoft Teams and Groups will not migrate
    • It is recommended to download content prior to November 8 when they will no longer be available; information regarding new Microsoft Teams sites will be announced in the future
  • New Logins/Same Password (More information: Employees / Students)
  • Changing Primary Emails (More information: Employees / Students)
    • Most Employees stay first.last@metrostate.edu
      • Employees already affiliated with another Minnesota State institution will default to that institution’s email address (i.e. @minneapolis.edu)
    • Most Students will change to first.last@my.metrostate.edu
      • Students already affiliated with another Minnesota State institution will default to that institution’s email address (i.e. @go.minneapolis.edu)
